What We Talk About When We Talk About Anime
July 16, 2019
Eversince I was a kid, I always enjoy watching anime. I remember running home from school after the class is over, with my heavy bag full of school books on my back, just to watch Slam Dunk and/or Prince of Tennis on the television. When every weekend means staying at home, trying get things done before 8am just to watch Hunter X Hunter and Fullmetal Panic. Nothing really changes when I got into high school. I think most of my classmates know that I’m a big fan of anime, I even started collecting K-zone, Otaku mag, and Neocomics. So yeah, I wasn’t a girly girl back then.
You see, I don’t really have a friend whom I can talk to about anime related stuff. I was kind of alone in my own little world, and it doesn’t help that I’m quite timid too. So yeah, I turned to online forums and groups. But even so, I still feel the lack of connection.
Not until I met my boyfriend two (2) years ago. How we met was pretty unusual but I remember that the first thing I asked him was, “Do you like anime?” Which he replied that he does. Imagine how happy I was to finally have someone to talk to about anime stuff. Not only that, he collects gunplas and anime figures too, just like how I collect anime magazine and comics back then.
After months of talking back and forth, discussing theories, and tagging each other with anime memes on Facebook, we finally got together. But just like any other relationship, ours aren’t perfect, there were lots of small fights, insecurities, and jealousy. But we worked hard, we try to understand each other, and most importantly, I learned to compromise.
Whenever we're out for lunch or dinner, we always never fail to make conversations about anime—like the responsible adults that we are. I remember there was one time where we got into this kind of heated debate about Attack on Titan, while we wait for our food. We can get pretty loud but there are times that we don't talk to each other too, we just sit down facing each other while minding our own business— I read while he plays Ragnarok or Mobile Legends on his phone. I'm just thankful that I finally found someone who I can be alone with.

The only anime I've ever watched is Digimon and Pokemon. Not even sure if those are considered anime.

I haven't watched a single ep of Digimon but I do love Pokemon. I even played Pokemon Go.

Yes true!
DeleteHow sweet that you and your boyfriend share a mutual love for anime. It probably makes it all the more enjoyable for you both :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm glad that we found each other.

Thank you!
DeleteThat's wonderful you've found someone who shares your love for anime! Although I don't know much about anime, I know the feeling of having an interest that isn't shared with others. The internet can play a great role in "finding your tribe". However, I'm like you; oftentimes I don't feel the connection even when I meet like-minded people online. Or else the connection is very fleeting.
ReplyDeleteYes, most of the connection I've had with people, be it irl or online, is always fleeting. It's sad but it's okay.
Deleteoh gosh Hunter X hunter! I used to watch that every day after I got home from school! so nostalgic! though, I rarely watch anime now.
ReplyDeleteYes me too! It's like one of the best anime those times— still is now.
DeleteI've never really watched anime. This is such a cute post. I love your pictures. The food is so appetizing and you are so pretty.

I think one of the most important things in a relationship is that you have mutual interests. There definitely has to be something that binds you together .... a hobby or interest that you can do together. Your photos are beautiful and the food looks amazing!

DeleteThere are so many cool animes out there. It is a bummer that you didn't have a friend to talk to about anime. I felt the same way when I was younger. It is great that your boyfriend can talk to you about anime! I'm glad that you both work together to figure each other's differences out. Glad you had a fun time at the cafe as well!

Replying comments in the old way is good to know that you are having a good life. That is comforting. I really like the anime too and even now when I am to my late twenties I enjoy the anime too much like when I was young. The difference now I have obligations. Thank you for visiting my blog and I hope we can maintain in touch but please don't publish your link in the comments. I hope you can have a good day darling
ReplyDeleteThat's good to know that you like anime too. And thank you!
DeleteYour story is so cute. Love when you meet likeminded people who share the same interests.
